From JR Yotsuya Station Kojimachi Exit, go east  down Shinjuku Dori until you come to a Mitsui  Sumitomo Bank and our local coffee shop, Cafe de Crie.

From the Namboku Line, follow the signs to JR  lines (exit #3) then walk through Yotsuya station to  Kojimachi exit.

MANAGEMENT TRAINING TOOLS

DiSC – DIMENSIONS OF BEHAVIOR
In the 1920s, US psychologist William Moulton Marston was interested in observing how normal people behave in their daily lives. Based on his research, four distinct dimensions of behavior were modeled: Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness.

Although everyone has a preferred behavior style with (possibly) a strong secondary style, we actually use all four styles to varying levels as we assess and re-assess each new environment we enter.

It is important to remember DiSC is not a personality test. Your personality is a complex mixture of your genes (DNA) plus your life experiences such as up bringing, schooling and hobbies. DiSC looks at behavior, the result of your personality mixing with a particular environment. As our environments are regularly changing so our behavior changes in different situations. While you may not be able to change your fundamental personality, you can change the way you decide to respond to new environments.


EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE (EQ)
EQ has caught the business world by storm since Dr. Daniel Goleman's groundbreaking books; Emotional Intelligence and Working with Emotional Intelligence were released in the late 1990s. Defined simply as our ability to manage our relationships and ourselves effectively, this approach to human behavior is now a growing measure for determining career and life success. Why are Fortune 500 companies in Japan and around the world screening for emotional maturity for management fast-tracking and overseas assignments? As long as we continue to work with others, emotions and our ability to build positive relationships will dictate how successful we are.

AMT Group’s module on EQ is built upon self-reflection and exercises to immediately increase empathy and listening skills of participants. Combined with Japan’s first domestically designed EQ test, the EQS is linked to business outcomes and approved by the Japanese Psychological Association. The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell

Authors: Malcolm Gladwell

Reviewer: Joshua Rhodes, March Book Club

This book takes an in-depth look at how trends get started. Using examples from the worlds of business, education, fashion, and media, Gladwell paints a detailed picture of how the dynamics of groups can be understood and influenced.

Each of our Stars took away some interesting points that could be applied at AMT Group. For presentations and one-on-one communications, The Tipping Point adds insight into delivering a strong visual message and understanding “conversational rhythm.” In relation to company culture, Gladwell also emphasizes the importance of the subtle details when initiating change. For example, New York’s declining crime rate is partially attributed to cleaning up the graffiti in the subways! Finally, The TP left a lasting impression on all of us in regards to behavior and controlling your own environment. Each AMT Group member agreed with the idea that we can change our behaviors both in the office and at home by understanding our surroundings and how that affects our reaction to them.

Good to Great

This is the book that looked at 1000s of publicly listed corporations in the United States and discovered 11 companies that consistently outperformed the market average by three times over a 15 year period from the late 80s to the beginning of this century. It was encouraging to learn that a couple of Collins’ elite 11 are recent AMT Group learning and development partners.

What we found to be most relevant from the book for our friends in the Tokyo business community are three fold: The right people, a culture of discipline and a Level 5 Leader. Great companies focus on getting the right people on the bus and the wrong people off it. First who then what, leads to great organizations. Next he found it imperative that for great success an organization stay the course of a vision. A company may need to adjust to the sometimes brutal reality of the market place but never change direction as discipline creates enormous momentum. Finally, those truly great companies are led not by superhuman leaders but by focused individuals who put the company before their own personal success.
